A healthy species for a change :)

This weird looking birdy is a Blue Throated Barbet (Megalaima Asiatica) and thanks its name to its colouring and the black bristles (barbets) that surround its heavy bill (not sure if it's visible in the small view).

They're very wide spread around Asia, up till the lower mountains of the Himalayas, and pretty social. They love fruit so it's relatively easy to lure them and you'll often find them in small groups. They can call up to 30 times a minute and usually when one starts the rest quickly follows.

They are of the same order as Toucans, which is probably a better known species.

Please don't hesitate to comment on what you like (or dislike) about the picture, any feedback is appreciated. Don't worry though, I won't kill you if you fav+run.

Thanks,

Ghost

Your camera must have a fantastic zoom capability or perhaps some of these birds do not fear people. Great capture either way I wish we had wildlife like this around where I live.

My camera isn't that good to be honest, it has a 12x optical zoom and 4x digital (for a total of 48), but I try not to go over a 72mm focal length at 12x as images tend to get to grainy for my taste at higher zoom. It's a fixed lens and after market extensions aren't really all that good.

It's a matter of being very quiet, very patient, picking the right spot and staying there without moving for a long time. This was taken in a 3000 square meter aviary; from about a meter away, I go there very often so the birds know me and these guys aren't at all shy.

Its a great shot either way. The nature preserve around my home has a few winter birds hanging around that are intrepid enough to eat from your hand. Its mostly chickadee birds, cardinals, and some others including hawks (I'm not very knowledgeable). My camera would require me to get real close for a shot like this but with the cold I don't plan on standing around for too long. Maybe come spring or summer I could get lucky.

That's what I like about this place, they're used to people but yet still wild enough to stay clear; touching them is not allowed fortunately (birds can get sick that way really quickly). But once you come there often (I go about once every two weeks, with or without camera) they seem to remember you.

The closest I've ever been was when a Bali Starling landed next to me and jumped on my camera. I was like :wow: gorgeous, shit I can't take a picture, :wow:, shit!, :wow:, Shit! Shit! Shit, :wow: ... it stayed for only a few seconds of course but damn I would have loved to have taken that shot :D
